India: Noida man gets 10-year jail for raping minor, 5 years for abducting her

NOIDA: A court in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl and another five years for abducting her with an intention to compel her for marriage.

Both the punishments would run concurrently, according to the order of the Special POCSO Court Judge (First) Vikas Nagar, who also slapped a penalty of Rs 55,000 on the convict.

India: Two planes land, take off within close interval on same runway at Mum airport; DGCA probes incident

MUMBAI: Aviation regulator DGCA is probing an incident of an IndiGo plane landing and an Air India aircraft taking off from the same runway in less than a minute at the Mumbai airport, officials said on Sunday.

The watchdog has derostered the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) who was on duty at the time of the incident on Saturday, while IndiGo has initiated a probe into the matter, they added.

A purported video of one plane landing and another taking off from the same runway has been shared on social media.

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay Sunday said Narendra Modi might be taking oath as prime minister for a third term, but he does not have a mandate like Jawaharlal Nehru, the only other PM to have three consecutive terms, had.

Bandyopadhyay, who was on Saturday re-elected as the leader of the TMC in Lok Sabha, also said the opposition will play a positive role in the functioning of parliament.

"People have given some opinion in his (PM Modi) favour... But it is not like Nehru ji (who) had the verdict behind him," he said.

AMARAVATI: Telugu Desam Party Lok Sabha members from Andhra Pradesh, K Ram Mohan Naidu and Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, are likely to be inducted into the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that would be sworn in on Sunday.

According to a post on 'X' by former TDP MP Galla Jayadev, Naidu, Srikakula Lok Sabha member will get a Cabinet minister post, while Pemmasani, Guntur MP, would get a minister of state berth.

India: Kangana slap row: Farmer outfits take out march in support of CISF woman constable

CHANDIGARH: Several farmer outfits, including the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, on Sunday took out a march in Mohali in support of the CISF woman constable, who allegedly slapped actor and BJP MP-elect Kangana Ranaut.

Farmer leaders demanded that a fair investigation should be conducted into the matter while asserting that there should not be any injustice with the woman constable Kulwinder Kaur.

Adequate security personnel were deployed in the wake of the march, which began from Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali.

NAGPUR: A man was sentenced to death on Monday by a Nagpur court for raping and murdering a 5-year-old girl in 2019.

Sanjay Puri (32) was sentenced to death by District Judge and Additional Sessions Judge S R Padwal under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 376(A)(B) of IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, said Special Public Prosecutor Prashant Kumar Sathianathan.

India: Sharjeel Imam granted bail by HC in sedition case

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted bail to student activist Sharjeel Imam in connection with a 2020 communal riots case involving allegations of sedition and unlawful activities.

Imam assailed a trial court order refusing to grant him bail even though he has undergone more than half of the maximum sentence that can be awarded to him in case of a conviction.

"Appeal is allowed," a bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain said after hearing the counsel for Imam and the Delhi Police.
