India: Election petition filed in Gujarat HC on rejection of Cong's Surat LS candidate's nomination form Aseem Chaudhary 04/06/2024 - 10:26

AHMEDABAD: A petition challenging the validity and legality of the returning officer's decision to reject the nomination of the Congress' Surat Lok Sabha candidate Nilesh Kumbhani was filed in the Gujarat High Court on Monday.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mukesh Dalal was declared winner unopposed after Kumbhani's nomination was rejected and other candidates withdrew from the race.

India: Gujarat HC to hear Rahul Gandhi's plea in defamation case

Ahmedabad, Apr 29 (PTI) The Gujarat High Court will hear on Saturday Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's appeal challenging the order of the Surat sessions court declining a stay to his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his "Modi surname" remark.

Gandhi's appeal will be heard by Justice Hemant Prachchhak on April 29, the cause list published by the high court said.

India: Guj court acquits all 26 accused in 2002 gangrape and multiple murders case during Godhra communal riots

Godhra, Apr 1 (PTI) A court in Gujarat has acquitted all 26 persons accused of gangrape and murder of more than a dozen members of a minority community in separate incidents in Kalol during 2002 communal riots for want of evidence in the 20-year-old case.

Of the total 39 accused, 13 died during the pendency of the case and the trial against them was abated.

India: Public flogging by state police in Gujrat: TMC files complaint with NHRC

New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI) The TMC has filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission in connection with the public flogging of Muslim men by Gujarat Police personnel, party spokesperson Saket Gokhale said on Friday.

He said it is "a matter of shame" that the NHRC hasn't taken suo moto cognizance of the matter.

India: AAP party office in Gujarat raided

Ahmedabad, Sep 12 (PTI) Aam Aadmi Party leader Isudan Gadhvi has claimed local police raided the party office in Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad as soon as AAP's national convener Arvind Kejriwal landed here, but found nothing.

However, a police official refuted the claim and said when contacted, the AAP office-bearers did not give any details about who conducted the raid and what exactly happened.

Ahmedabad, May 18 (PTI) Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel on Wednesday resigned as the Gujarat Congress working president and from the party's primary membership.

Before quitting, Patel (28), who had joined the Congress in 2019, wrote a scathing letter to party chief Sonia Gandhi, claiming the Congress "only played to the role of a roadblock" over certain key issues in the country and was "merely reduced to opposing everything".
